Information and Communication Technology
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a rapidly expanding field that combines elements of computer science, telecommunications, electronics, and information systems. As digital infrastructure becomes integral to every sector—from education and health to governance and commerce—the study of ICT has become increasingly relevant for students aiming to build careers in today’s technology-driven world.
ICT focuses on the use of digital technologies to collect, store, process, and transmit information. Academic programmes typically cover computer networks, programming, cybersecurity, database management, cloud computing, systems analysis, and communication technologies. ICT also addresses how digital tools and platforms can be used to improve communication, efficiency, and service delivery across sectors.
Opportunities in Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, the ICT sector has experienced significant growth, supported by government initiatives such as “Digital Bangladesh”, which aims to digitise public services and expand internet access nationwide. The ICT Division and its affiliated organisations, including the Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority and BASIS, are actively creating opportunities for ICT professionals in government, education, business, and innovation sectors.
Private companies, tech startups, telecom operators, banks, and development organisations are all investing in ICT-based solutions, leading to high demand for skilled graduates. Common roles include network administrators, IT support specialists, database managers, web developers, and systems analysts. E-governance projects, automation in the banking sector, and the expansion of digital services have further increased demand for ICT professionals.
However, employers increasingly expect candidates to possess not only academic knowledge but also hands-on skills with relevant tools and platforms. Certifications in areas such as networking (e.g., Cisco CCNA), cloud services (e.g., AWS, Microsoft Azure), and information security can provide graduates with a competitive advantage. Soft skills such as problem-solving, communication, and project management are also valuable in ICT roles.
Opportunities Abroad
Globally, ICT is among the most in-demand fields, offering employment opportunities in developed economies such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and countries across Europe and the Middle East. Roles range from IT consulting and system integration to cloud architecture and digital communications.
For students pursuing higher education abroad, ICT-related degrees are widely available, with specialisations in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, information systems, and digital innovation. Admissions usually require English proficiency tests (IELTS or TOEFL) and, in some cases, the GRE.
Graduates with foreign degrees and relevant work experience may choose to return to Bangladesh, where they are often recruited for senior roles in both the public and private sectors. Others choose to remain abroad, where ICT continues to be a strategic sector with high employment demand and competitive compensation.
